What we believe

Christians have good news to share! Our good news we call the gospel. Read on to find out more...

We believe that God created our beautiful world, and the human race within it. Like an artist who lovingly crafts an artwork, God also loves us, his handiwork.

However, we are often ignorant of this fact. A lot of times, we don't even think about God, or that God might have his own hopes for how our lives turn out.

In fact, our own self-centredness leads us away from God. We pursue all kinds of worthless things. We even go so far as to harm others - sometimes intentionally, sometimes unintentionally - to get what we want.

If we're honest, none of us are truly innocent. Sometimes we even make a huge mess of things, unconscious of the fact that God may have in mind a better way of life for us than our own.

But God is constantly calling us back to himself. He wants to walk with us throughout our lives. The Bible, from where we get our ideas about God, tells of a God who so loved us, that he sought to show us in the flesh what he is like. He made a way to enter creation in the person of Jesus Christ - taking on a body like ours, a voice like ours, and a heart like ours, to live in our world, to experience what we experience, and to communicate with us in a way we would finally understand. Jesus even experienced death, for our sakes.

Jesus' call was - and still is - "Follow me". Christians are today's "Jesus followers", who are trying to live - albeit imperfectly - in the way of Jesus, God's way. In Jesus, God offers us forgiveness for all our messes. What's more, God promises to remain with us always, through the shadows of this life, and into the next.

And more than that, the Bible tells us that God gives us the Holy Spirit as our guide and comfort now, in our day-to-day lives.

And that's good news! - because the invitation to follow is extended to you, too. All you have to do is come as you are, and follow Jesus... and that means learning about him and living your life with him in it. It's a transformational experience!

There is so much more to the story than can be told here. We recommend you read the New Testament - start with one of the books like Matthew, Mark, Luke or John, which cover Jesus' biography. Then from there, you can dig deeper... there is so much to discover!

At St Ninian's, we're really happy to give you some guidance as you explore the gospel and what it means for your life. We believe this learning best happens in community - you can't be expected to do it on your own! And that's why we meet up at church, to help one another with our spiritual growth.

If you have any questions, or you need a copy of the Bible, please ask!

"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."

Ephesians 2:8-9
